Historical resources and heritage
Serra da Aboboreira archaeological site, where the Chã da Parada dolmen, a national monument since 1910, can be found.
The Romanic-influenced Cruito Castro. There are numerous milestones in the region.
The Paleochristian polychromatic mosaic in Frende, a rare vestige in the north-western part of the peninsula.
In São João do Castelo-Frende, a set of five graves excavated from the rock is visible.
The Santa Maria de Ermelo Monastery, where the Romanesque church with three naves and a Gothic window is of note.
The Santo André Monastery, with a mother church containing three naves, as well as a museum nucleus of sacred art with work dating back to 1120.
Valadares parish church, with frescoes from the 15th century.
Casa de Tormes, where Eça de Queiróz was inspired while writing his book “The City and the Mountains”.
The Teixeira Pillory, with a charter from D. Manuel dating from 1514.
The “Baião Treasure”, presently housed in the National Archaeology Museum in Lisbon includes: two pairs of earrings, a set of rosary beads and pendants, fragments of a bracelet or necklace and 12 buttons, all in gold.

Festivities
Of note is the district festival in honour of the patron saint, Saint Bartholomew, on the 24th of August. The handicraft fair takes place on the 23rd. Also of note are the smoked meat and “Cozido à Portuguesa fairs in the month of March. Finally, the Roast Lamb and Roasted Rice fair takes place in the last weekend of July.

The most important handicraft products are the Gestaçô canes, the brushwood baskets from Frende and the Fonte de Mel Cooperative mosaics. |
